Basically, a so called WebGIS is a geographic information system running on a web browser. A WebGIS application can be used by many users simultaneousely and you don’t need any installation procedures. Mostly, a browser based GIS application is used as a viewer of geodata which is delivered with some basic map functions. Normally, complex spatial functions are not offered. Based on the progresses in the development of the spatial frameworks and software for browsers (e.g. OpenLayers, MapServer) the creation of specialised, highly customised and more complex buisness applications is possible.
